· First, make sure you have a playable guitar.

That’s not always as easy as it sounds especially if the guitar is used. Take the guitar to someone who already plays pretty well, or better yet, to a guitar teacher, and have them look it over. Chances are the guitar could use at least a little adjustment to make it as easy to play as possible. If so, the person you asked to look at the guitar should know someone who fixes guitars.

· Second, find a good teacher.

Evening group classes at local high schools and community colleges are a very affordable and easy way to learn the basics. You can also ask people who already play if they can recommend a teacher. Some teachers are even using video chat such as Skype when students can’t be there in person.

· Third, persevere.

Be patient. Playing the guitar can be a little tricky at first but hang in there - you’ll get it. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself and just try to have fun. If you have a good teacher he or she will adjust the lessons so that you can progress at your own pace.
